What You Think On Matters

What You Think On matter

We have all heard that we are what we eat and though this is true concerning our health, as importantly, we are what we think on! Proverbs 23:7 tells us plainly, “For as [a man] thinks in his heart, so is he.”

One of the most important things we do is to think. And our thinking happens without our even willing it to. Our thinking can be profitable or futile. We are, or at least we should be, masters of our thoughts. We can think on the good or we can think on the bad; the choice is ours. But we cannot think both good and bad thoughts simultaneously anymore than we can travel east and west at the same time. We have to choose carefully what to think. According to Philippians 4:8 we are to have our thoughts on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy!

It’s true that thinking on the good in your current storm does take work. In fact it has been said, “To think truth regardless of appearance is laborious and requires the expenditure of more power than any other work a person has to perform.” But the key is – it can be done!

2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us how to get our thoughts where they are to be by casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. Simply, we check every thought against what God’s Word says. There is power that comes from focus. If you can just put your thoughts on what God wants us to think on and give your mind to God in such a way that He can use it, it will be amazing what He will do! You will have to endure some storms in life and some disappointments along the way, but even storms and disappointments have the power to change your life, if you can make sure your thinking is right in the process!

There was a poem written about two men who were in prison. Two of the most important lines of that poem go like this:

Two men looked out from prison bars,
One saw the mud, the other saw the stars.

As a man thinks in his heart so is he. You can live with the mud of wrong thinking in your situation or can look differently at your situation and see the “stars”! Focus on what God promises in his Word instead of what is warring around you!
