Am I Praying Properly?

Sandra Hersey. live life out loud. Keys to victorious faithPrayer is vital to our lives, as most of us know. However, most give their “grocery list” prayers I like to call them, which sound something like this: “God, help me pay my mortgage this month. Help my mom to feel better. Send me someone to give me some HELP. Make my spouse understand me more. Please God make my children mind! Thank you Jesus. Amen.”

Though prayer is important, it is of the most importance that we know how to pray properly. And as with anything we must look to the Bible for the correct answer, and who better to look at as an example than Jesus!

When we face times of trials, and storms rise up in our lives, we can seem to be like a tossed ship in raging waters. But God intends for us to chart those “storms of life” with the promises He has already laid out for us in His Word. Jesus knew this when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness. Now you may say “I’m not being tempted to sin, I just need an answer to my prayer.” Think of this my friend, when we are worried we ARE being tempted to sin by not trusting God. God does not want us to worry or His Word would not declare “Be anxious for nothing!” ( Read here for more on why we should not worry). The point I want to show is not about temptation, it is how to follow Jesus when we have Satan bringing on a storm in our life.

Let’s look at Matthew 4: 1-11- 1THEN JESUS was led (guided) by the [Holy] Spirit into the wilderness (desert) to be tempted (tested and tried) by the devil. 2And He went without food for forty days and forty nights, and later He was hungry. 3And the tempter came and said to Him, If You are God’s Son, command these stones to be made [loaves of] bread. 4But He replied, It has been written, Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.  5Then the devil took Him into the holy city and placed Him on a turret (pinnacle, gable) of the temple sanctuary. 6And he said to Him, If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, He will give His angels charge over you, and they will bear you up on their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 7Jesus said to him, On the other hand, it is written also, You shall not tempt, test thoroughly, or try exceedingly the Lord your God. 8Again, the devil took Him up on a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory (the splendor, magnificence, preeminence, and excellence) of them.  9And he said to Him, These things, all taken together, I will give You, if You will prostrate Yourself before me and do homage and worship me.  10Then Jesus said to him, Begone, Satan! For it has been written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve. 11Then the devil departed from Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.”

Notice Jesus had the same reply to everything the devil threw at Him; He said over and over “it has been written!” Jesus took the Word of God and declared “It is written” then He spoke out what the Word said about His particular situation!  For example when Satan tried to tell Jesus he would give him all things Jesus said in verse 10 “Begone, Satan! For it has been written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.” Jesus spoke out it is written and backed it up with Deuteronomy 6:13. Jesus also said, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you” (John 15:7). We must have God’s word abiding in us so we can declare it out when we need answer to our prayers!

It is vital we follow Jesus’ examples and instructions. He knew how to talk with His Father  and get His prayers answered, as well as how to send the devil packing when he showed up!

First, find the scripture which has already been promised to you in God’s Word. If you need healing find a healing scripture like 1 Peter 2:24. If you need help in your finances stand and declare Philippians 4:19. If you have an unsaved loved one; bind up the devil over their life according to Matthew 12:29, and pray the Lord of the harvest according to Matthew 9:38 will send labors into their lives to lead them to Jesus! There is a promise from God to you in His Word for EVERY situation in your life! You must find that promise!

Second, you pray out “Father, in Jesus Name, it is written in your Word….” then add the Scripture you are standing on!

Third, give thanks to the Father IN ADVANCE for doing what He promised He would do. THIS is walking in faith! When we know BEFORE it comes that God WILL do it, THEN we are walking in faith. Faith is NOT hoping God will. Faith is not wringing our hands and pleading with God; it is declaring out of our mouths the Word of God. Declaring “it is written, and in Jesus Name” to the Father. Then we keep thanking Him that it is done, NO MATTER what we see in the natural!

We must come to the point where we know we must declare first “It is written” before we can claim “it is finished!”

How to Sing for Joy When You Have No Joy

How to Sing for Joy When You Have No JoyEach morning I start my time of prayer with Psalms and Proverbs before my devotional. For me Psalms is a way for me to express to God all I want to say.  I read the verses out loud as prayers to Him and add my own prayers along side. Then I move on to the Proverb of the day, if the date is the 2nd I read Proverbs 2 and turn it also into a prayer.

Today I kept coming to verse after verse which read “sing for joy.” Then I started to think about storms raging in my life and then I thought of you and what you might be facing right now. The Holy Spirit prompted me to remind both myself and you that we must sing for joy when facing obstacles which want to overtake us!

Joy is a fruit of the Spirit. And these fruit are the very characteristics of God. He has given us joy however it is our responsibility to exercise this characteristic and make it grow. We must use this fruit of joy during the times when we are not feeling too much joy. How do we exercise this joy? Well one way is to sing for it! Look at Isaiah 12:

2 Behold, God, my salvation! I will trust and not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and song; yes, He has become my salvation.

3Therefore with joy will you draw water from the wells of salvation.

4And in that day you will say, Give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name and by means of His name [in solemn entreaty]; declare and make known His deeds among the peoples of the earth, proclaim that His name is exalted!

5Sing praises to the Lord, for He has done excellent things [gloriously]; let this be made known to all the earth.

6Cry aloud and shout joyfully, you women and inhabitants of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

We have reasons to sing for joy:

1. God is our salvation – verses 2-3

“With joy shall you draw water from the wells of salvation.”

For us Jesus is like the river which flows from the infinite divine nature – the one true God.  He is for us the only source, the inexhaustible source. The apostle Paul said it this way: “…They drank from the Rock which followed them, and that Rock was Christ.” (I Cor. 10:4)

The well was also the meeting-place in those hot lands where the shepherds came in from the fields and the maidens came from the tents and they met in the cool of the evening. I can envision laughter and talk was all around. Joy ringing out as they spoke of the day. So joyful is the heart of those whose soul is filled and feasted with God – our salvation.

II. God is our strength verses 4-5

We may recall God’s triumph for the Israelites over the Egyptians at the Red Sea; then Moses and Miriam led the Israelites into singing the praises of God and exalted His mighty strength (Exodus 15:2). The prophet Isaiah called upon Judah to do the same. Let’s move beyond Egypt and beyond the nation of Judah to our own deliverance in Christ.

We must focus on and be grateful for His mighty deeds and sing for joy. We must know that He is strong enough to handle all of our challenges in our lives – no matter what they are!  Notice also, that His mighty Name and deeds are to be proclaimed to all nations. We may not be called to a world-wide ministry to proclaim to other nations the goodness of God, but we should however never lose sight of the fact that God is the God of the whole world and He can and will move on our behalf! And we proclaim His mighty deeds and Name to our little corner of the world – our family and friends!

Unfortunately what happens is no matter how much scripture we can quote or how long we have been a child of God, we don’t really and truly believe deep down that God can help our difficult situation or even wants to help us! I’m not talking about our easy fixes – we believe He can fix those. I am talking about the really hard ones. The ones that are raging so strong we feel as if we are not going to be able to hold on much longer! Now let’s be honest here. We can sing for joy and walk in faith when it’s all good! But let the earth start shifting under our faith walk and bam! We start wondering what’s going on- and the longer this journey goes the less our faith and singing gets. We start buying into the lie of the enemy that we must have done something wrong which angered our Heavenly Father. God loves you and I so much He only wants what is good for us. Scripture after scripture tells of His goodness and His wonderful promises to us! But do we really, entirely, and wholeheartedly believe that when we are in the midst of raging storm?

Are we supposed to go through hard times as Christians? Of course we are! We were never promised a perfect walk. Walking by faith is having faith when it’s tough to see the victory; but you know it’s there! Singing for joy is not having the joy because of the natural circumstances but we sing praises to our Lord and Savior and exercise that joy while we are feeling defeated – hence; singing FOR the joy!

We must stop thinking our trouble is a sign that we are in sin or that God is unhappy with us! We must realize when we face times of trouble that we must dig our heels in deep – deep into the living Word of God and stand on it. We must lift up our voice and pretend we are the next American Idol and sing to the top of our lungs with songs of praise to our God who loves us no matter what! Sing my beloved friend – sing FOR the joy in the midst of your trial and feels His peace cover you!

How to Worry Less

Want to worry less?Imagine a life without worry! As impossible as this may seem God intended a better life than a life of worrying about our children, bills, health, etc. The apostle Paul tells us exactly how to handle worry in Philippians 4: 6-9. I know we have heard these passages over and over, but have we made them part of our day-to-day lives?

Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. 7And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 8For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them]9Practice what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and model your way of living on it, and the God of peace (of untroubled, undisturbed well-being) will be with you.”

I put in bold the words I want us to really focus on: We are not to worry about anything! What? Yes! Worry is not something God wants us to do, however we are always worrying about something are we not? So from today on each time we begin to have worry creep up into our minds we must replace that worry thought with prayer. As we are praying we are to let God know what our desire is for this circumstance we are in. “God help me” is not specific enough! Notice we are to make definite requests. Tell Him verse 6 says what we need! And while we are making our requests known we are to make sure we are thinking back on how many times God has come through for us in the past. We must spend some time setting our thoughts on things God has ALREADY done for us and thank Him for those things. We are to read in the Bible how many times a situation seemed impossible and God showed up and showed out! My friend He knows your name and loves you very much, I believe He led you here today to read this just so you can be reminded of that! He wants the best for you, He wants to work this out for you, but He wants you to ask Him.

In verse 8 Paul tells us what we are to think about. We all have thoughts come into our minds but whether they get to stay and hang out is up to us! We are to give our minds a purposeful thought. This verse tells us our thoughts need to be set on things that are true, honorable, pure, lovely, of good report. Not things of worry, doubt, confusion, or anxiety. When we have the former thoughts; those are not pleasing thoughts to God. We must drive out those invading thoughts and replace them and think on purpose the thoughts God wants us to think on. By replaying in our minds past victories God has given us – and standing on His Word and declaring “My God shall supply ALL my need!”  This is a great way to get our minds off of our problems and get them on God and His promises to us. Remember if God said it in His Word He will do it no matter how much time has passed!

Look at Daniel 9:23 and what the angel of God said to Daniel about the fact he was praying “The moment you began praying, a command was given.” Now look at Isaiah 65:24 “I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!” God doesn’t have to check his Facebook inbox or text messages to see when we send up a prayer to Him. He hears immediately and He immediately answers, however those prayers are not always revealed for us in the natural for many different reasons. But take comfort in knowing God hears us and answers us immediately and now it is our responsibility to trust Him and His Word and wait for the manifestation of the answer! Notice verse 9 tells us we are to practice what we have learned! We can only change our worry but acting on what the Word tells us to do instead!

God has blessings stored up but they are released when we pray and ask Him – so stop worrying and start asking!

Where are you putting your trust?

Where are you putting your trust? Keys to victorious faith Inspirational Blog

If you are a follower of the news both locally and nationally you can hear repeatedly how the world is in trouble. It has even bled over into the writings of TV shows! We can no longer even escape from the reality of the world with our favorite TV shows because they too remind us what kind of trouble this world has gotten itself into. I for one have decided I will not continue to watch a TV show who wants to feed me the misery the news media is feeding! I am a child of the Most High King and I WILL NOT live in fear. I WILL trust my heavenly Father who tells me He WILL supply ALL my needs (Phil. 4:19)!

How often has somebody told you not to worry about whatever situation you are in? Then how often have you been able to listen to and heed to such advice? Jesus gave us the instructions on how to deal with EVERY situation we are facing, including the ones the world is in! Over and over Jesus instructed others and us to fear not! Yet over and over his disciples shuddered in fear and I dare say, you and I have found ourselves in that place as well.

I believe God has something better for you and I as His children. We are to have a life beyond worry, doubt, lack, and even fear. By the power of God’s Word and the power of God’s love for us, we CAN walk in victory in ALL areas of our lives!

God wants us to have life and have it more abundantly! He wants you and I to live in the area of more than enough. And His desire is to bring to LIFE those who are held by Satan in fear, lack, doubt, and even death! When we are in lack we have death so to speak in our area of need. When we are in fear we have death in our midst; death of whatever the enemy is trying to rob from us! Satan’s ONE mission is to steal from you, kill you, and destroy you AND all you have and hold dear! PERIOD!! But what we must realize and get a hold of; our God is not effected by economic numbers or a medical report or any other circumstance we are facing!

The enemy is waging war against this world AND believers with a spirit; that spirit is one of fear, doubt, and unbelief. He has cunningly stepped in using the media and other things of this world to have us gripped with worry and fear. Asking questions of “how” and “why.” And in response we see people afraid of what may happen. It grieves me as I know it must grieve our Heavenly Father when He sees even His own children in fear and doubt. God did not give us a spirit of fear. He has always wanted us to have more and do more, why? Because we are His mouth piece, His hands, His feet! WE are the ones who are to bring the Gospel to this world, WE are the ones who are to break off the bondages on others. WE are the ones who are to be walking in victory. But as I look around I see what the enemy has done to even the children of God. But you and I are to rise up and STAND in faith on what the Word of God says. The Word of God is truth! It does not lie! It is for TODAY and it is OUR responsibility to stand up and say NO! We will not live like this, we will NOT live in fear, sickness, lack, worry, or unbelief!!! We are MORE than conquerors so we must start taking our authority in this world and live like the Bible has said we can! We are in a battle and we must fight, but our weapon we are to fight with IS the Word of God!

Whatever you are facing today, the answer has ALREADY be given to you, YOU must find it in the Word of God, and STAND on it! How long must I stand you ask – as long as you have to! Read the Word and you will see that so many people had to stand, they had to wait for God to move, and as they waited God ALWAYS moved, they ALWAYS got the victory! And you and I can too, it is up to us, are we willing to trust God or trust in this world? Are we willing to say My God supplies my needs, not this world. Are we willing to stand and declare WITH God ALL things are possible to those who believe! Do you believe, do you believe and trust your Father in Heaven. He loves you and He wants you victorious! Believe, trust, and stand on the Word of God!

Do Not Fear

Help on how to not fear. Keys to victorious faith. Inspirational BlogThis world we live in is in turmoil and we can begin to live in fear as we hear of lack, loss, sickness, and death. It is easy to get swept away when the world is so led by the media. For once I would like the majority of the news to be mostly good news and the short last-minute be of bad news.

The truth is we are not honoring God when we walk in fear. The Word tells us that God has not given us a spirit of fear {2 Timothy 1:7} therefore when we are fearful we should know that God is not in it! Fear is a tactic the Devil has always used. If he can get us afraid, then he knows we will not use our words to confess what the Word of God says, we will however confess lack, doubt, unbelief, and even death!

Today we are going to confess the Word of God over our lives and over our situations! We will choose to not walk in fear, we will not be led by fear, we do not fear – for God is a good God {James 1:17}
Say this out loud now and declare it over your life:
The Word declares to me:
“The Lord is my Shepard, I shall NOT want.” Psalm 23:1

“…the evil one cannot harm him (me)” 1 John 5:18

“Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us (me) with benefits…” Psalm 68:19

“It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.” 2 Samuel 22:33

“The Lord gives strength to His people (me); the Lord blesses His people (me) with peace.” Psalm 29:11

“But my God shall supply all your (my) need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” Phil 4:19

Stand on the Word of God today, do not allow fear to rule and reign in your mind or in your mouth! Remember your words are seeds; so sew good seed to receive a good harvest!

How Are You Walking?

Sandra Hersey. Live life out loud. Keys to victorious faith

1 Chronicles 10:1-14 recounts the story of Saul while he is King over Israel for almost 40 years. God had given to Saul, Samuel His Prophet, to lead and instruct him in his actions. Before King Saul was to go to battle against the Philistines Samuel had anointed Saul and given him specific instructions to wait for him at Gilgal for seven days and Samuel would come and make burnt offerings and make sacrifices of peace offerings for Saul. However, while Saul is there waiting; day seven has arrived and Saul is getting anxious and worried. His soldiers were starting to scatter, it was day seven and Samuel had not yet arrived as promised, the Philistines were gathering their forces at Michmash, and Saul was fearful of an attack of the Philistines. So in haste Saul assumed the priestly prerogatives and offered up the burnt offerings himself, resulting in sin and ultimately his demise because he had not only disobeyed the Law of Moses but he failed to keep the commandment God had given him through His prophet Samuel. This resulted in Saul dying at the hand of God himself.

Looking at this particular story of Saul we can see why he acted as he did. Fear, worry, and doubt had crept in and was over shadowing Saul’s judgment. When we are faced with situations in our lives which cause us to look at the natural around us instead of what God has already promised in His Word, we tend to act like Saul did. God had sent His prophet Samuel to Saul to instruct him, and God has sent His Word to us to instruct us. We are to focus on what God has already promised in His word. We are not to be led by fear, worry, and doubt. Instead of making a list of reasons concerning what is going on in the natural, which causes us to react, we are to focus on what God has already promised us and stand on that! His Word has already promised you and I all we need to face what seem like impossible situations. Nothing is impossible with God! ©
