Reading More and Dusting Less

Reading more and dusting less this year.

Well we have made it through the first week of a new year, how are you doing on your resolutions lol? No matter where you are on keeping your goals you set last week I do love those set in this little story. I read this a while back, though I am not sure really where it comes from. What I do know is that it is a great addition to the new year. Even if we do not do each thing, looking at what we can add to our lives will only make it richer.

“I’m reading more and dusting less. I’m sitting in the yard and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time working. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure. I’m trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.

I’m not ‘saving’ anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, or the first Amaryllis blossom. I wear my good blazer to the market. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries. I’m not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank. ‘Someday’ and ‘one of these days’ are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.

I’m not sure what others would’ve done had they known they wouldn’t be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted. I think they would have called family members and a few close friends. They might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner or for whatever their favorite food was. I’m guessing; I’ll never know.

It’s those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry because I hadn’t written certain letters that I intended to write one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn’t tell my husband and parents often enough how much I truly love them. I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives.

And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift from God.”

New Year’s Resolutions We Need To Keep

New Years Resolutions We Need to Keep as Christians. Keys to victorious faith Inspirational BlogIt is that time again – time to put down the old, look ahead to the new, and make those New Year’s Resolutions. Everyone makes them but few keep them, at least that is how it seems to be. But as a Christian are we to make New Year’s Resolutions? I asked this question before, you can read it here. But today we are going to talk about New Year’s Resolutions we need to keep.

Paul in Philippians 3:13 gives us our first resolution. “…Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.”  Many times we are so focused on what is in our past. We focus on the should have, would have, could have. Now I know our past is important, for one thing, we learn from the past. But I want us to take a real good look at what we really are focusing on in our past. We need to let go of the hurt, pain and disappointment and move forward towards what God has for us. We cannot move on until we let go. It has been said, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize the situation is over, you cannot move forward. So start this year off letting go of the past. Take the lessons learned and refuse to keep focused on what you think or wish had taken place. Make this new year about what is ahead for you. Let go of the past and walk into the future.

Our next resolution comes from Enoch in Genesis 5:24 “Enoch walked with God..” Enoch was the first man to discover the delight of walking with God. He pressed into God and because of this he learned how to commune with God in every area of his life. This kind of relationship was worked on daily by Enoch and this daily walk will take some work from us as well. It is simple enough to spend time with God by reading our Bible and praying every day, however, I bet we all could admit we need more “daily” on this one. It is something which does take discipline and is a resolution we need to keep. Remember being a Christian is not a religion, a system or a belief, it is something which is active and growing, and only you can walk this out. It does take time and discipline, but why not start out by reading your Bible for 15 minutes and praying while on the drive in the car instead of listening to the radio. Make small changes and watch what happens. This year work on making a daily walk with God part of your new norm.

Our third resolution this New Year is following the advice of James in chapter 5 verse 19, “My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back.” Take this year and not only work on your resolutions to change your walk with Christ, but bring someone along with you. If you have a Bible study group, ask someone to come along. Ask them to go to church with you. Just ask. Now let me interject here, it is not our duty to give out the rules and regulations this new person needs to adhere to in order to walk with Jesus. Just invite them and allow the Holy Spirit to lead their day to day walk.

There you have it, a few simple New Year’s Resolutions we need to keep. Ones that may be small but will have a big impact in our life! You can make the changes you need. My prayer for you this year, May the Lord bless you and keep you! Happy New Year!

How to write out goals

Did you know the Bible tells us to write it down?

Habakkuk 2:2 instructs us to write it down and make it plain. Several times people have heard me refer to the story of “Alice In Wonderland.” Alice is on her way and she runs into the Cheshire cat who asks Alice “where are you going?” Alice replies she does not know. And the line the cat gives in response to her has such wisdom in it; “then how will you know when you get there?”If we do not have written goals then how will we know when we get there? Write it down and make it plain.

Have a plan. We have all heard the saying have a plan and work the plan. If you do not have a goal you have not counted the cost is what my Pastor says, and he is so right! To do anything worth while in life it takes discipline and sacrifice; and we must count the cost before we go off just doing. Without a written down plan we are just aimlessly wondering about.

Once as I sat in a leadership meeting at my church, my pastor was talking about goals. Then I heard the Holy Spirit reminding me how God has goals too. He had a goal when He sent His son to this earth. The goal for Jesus was to die on the cross and be the sacrificial Lamb once and for all for us; His blood was to bring to God the final sacrifice.

The Proverbs 31 Woman had goals; which is how she got so much accomplished for her family. During the meeting the Holy Spirit kept giving me the word “plan” and here is the acronym he gave me for “plan.”

Praising Him

Laying Before Him

Asking His Will

Now write it down and go!

As you seek Him and His will for your next season – He will instruct you. Then write it down and make it plain!
